Indiana Harbor Belt Ship Canal
A one time several railroads crossed this canal; now it's down to just two. The nearest bridges - long out of commission and kept permanently raised - hosted B&O and IHB lines. The lowered bridge in the background - still in service - carries Norfolk Southern's ex-NYC/CR Chicago Line. Out of sight behind it is the EJ&E's Lakefront Line bridge, also still in service. The view is looking northeast toward Lake Michigan; part of the huge Mittal Steel complex is visible in the distance.

Mike Rapchak Jr. General Mant thanks, Joe. I couldn't recall which railroad once rested on those huge pilings. :) 10/15/2008 7:33:38 PM
